Krasnoyarsk Stolby State Reserve is a renowned nature preserve featuring dramatic sandstone rock formations, rich Siberian taiga forests, and a popular destination for hiking, climbing, and wildlife viewing near the city of Krasnoyarsk.
Established in 1925, Krasnoyarsk Stolby State Reserve covers a unique and rugged landscape located on the right bank of the Yenisei River in Siberia’s Krasnoyarsk Krai. The reserve is named after its iconic 'Stolby'—rock pillars of varying shapes and sizes formed from sandstone, rising sharply above the surrounding taiga forest. These formations are not only a geological marvel but also a cultural symbol and a cherished natural landmark in Russia. The area's terrain is characterized by dense coniferous forests dominated by Siberian pine, spruce, and fir, providing habitat to diverse wildlife including elk, sable, lynx, and a variety of bird species. The reserve plays a critical role in preserving these forest ecosystems in a region prone to industrial development. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Stolby for its well-maintained network of hiking trails that lead to different rock pillars such as the Devil’s Finger, Grandpa and Grandma Stolby, and the Atlantis Pillar, many of which offer challenging climbs for experienced rock climbers. Hiking routes range from easy walks to steep ascents, often rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the taiga and the Yenisei River. Winter transforms the park into a destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, while summer invites camping and nature photography. The proximity of the reserve to the city of Krasnoyarsk allows accessible outdoor recreation combined with conservation education. As a protected area, it fosters environmental awareness, attracting nature lovers from across Russia and beyond.
